As per its mission, the Center combines research and development. Both are pursued through independently operating but closely collaborating silos. The Research Silo's main work areas are behavioral economics and poverty. In its research projects randomized controlled field trials are predominantly conducted to study the psychological and contextual drivers of the poor's ability to make and adhere to financial decisions. The Centre's Development Silo applies the findings to financial product development. Through an industry-like product innovation approach it not only tests novel financial instruments and their underlying research insights but also identifies issues in financial service regulations that may require a policy solution. Both silos combine efforts and resources to actively disseminate results and insights by means of conferences and various types of Centre publications.
